BRINK - from the makers of WolfET & QWET  Reply with quote

Well I don't see a thread about this already so I'll start one. First seen by me down at Quakecon this new IP looks to be a great game to reinfuse some fun into the dedicated PC fps market - developed by the creators of WolfET and Quake Wars Enemy Territory (the PC version, not the panned console ports), BRINK is a heavily team-centric FPS that shares most in common with their two previous games.

Here's a quick overview to get you up to speed on basically everything there is to know at this point (game releases in a week).

If you'd like more detail you can find BRINK's official "SMART" series videos that are the most updated info we've got atm.

Some key points:

- All rewards encourage teamwork. More points for doing anything else besides killing.
- No one shot kills except from a heavy rifle on a light via headshot. Grenades and knife attacks "incapacitate" knocking players down and disorienting them but usually they can still shoot back
- Class based but has some interesting twists like mines being invisible unless ID'd by spies (supposedly), medics passing revives that are optional and you choose when to use them, and engineers can give out damage buffs to players near them. (and more)
- Completely new and original (to a shooting game) "SMART" movement system that mimics parkour. Can be done with a single button, or manually via jump/crouch for increased efficiency. Think Mirror's Edge except you can cancel out the animation any time and throw grenades/shoot while performing the parkour. Light body types can do crazier moves while heavies can only do basic vaults/slides.
- Incredibly complex customization system for player (cosmetic), abilities (choose 3 out of like 18 I think, eventually), and weapons (think Crysis with muzzle flash changers, scopes, grips, bigger mags, etc). Unlock one addon and it's available for any gun.
- Intelligent bots - many news outlets report that they could not tell the difference between an AI and a person, who knows if this is because they're playing on console or what. Also supports "drop in/drop out" functionality similar to Left 4 Dead, so if you need to go AFK for a moment your team isn't at as huge disadvantage (but presumably you keep your spot).
- some more minor stuff you might be interested in: single player and multiplayer are the same, there are cutscenes everyone can watch (or play with their loadout instead if they want). Art style is pretty unique and new with more cartoony characters than CoD/BF but less than TF2.
- stopwatch will probably be the most popular gametype based on QWET/WolfET history, but they're changing the time to per objective, which will help alleviate massive standoffs that last 20 minutes at one objective
- uses idTech 4 (doom 3 engine)
- Steamworks integration including dedicated server (free) that supports ranked play, offline LAN

That last one is a big point for me and is why I hope some of you guys will be interested in this game, if we can get some 10+ all LAN-player games going it could be amazing Wink

Join the OKGG steam group if you're going to be playing this, we can coordinate through there too.

Finally I get a reply and this is it? Shocked

Did you at least read the part in bold that says it supports actual xp granting LAN dedicated servers? In other words, a modern game that you can play at LAN party on *gasp* LAN?

I think it unlocks at midnight est, so 11 our time. Hurry up if you want the 25% deal on d2d (coupon "sizzle") $37 for what could be the next great fps to last 10+ years! (ok hopeful thinking, but anyway). The d2d code goes right into steam like you bought it directly, since it's full on steamworks integration

It looks really fun, but I've been seeing a lot of "It's an awesome game, but it's not finished," type reviews.

Okay, having played it now, I'm sold. It's good fun.

My personal kit out has leaned toward heavy Engineer with an LMG, AR as secondary. Turrets take a couple seconds to track and identify, are easily damaged, and have to be maintained as a result. Making them only great for staving off hordes of enemies when defending a position. So very useful, but not the Soldier of Death they were in TF2; which is good.

I really like the supply aspect when it comes to abilities, especially when it comes to medics and their ability to rez others. Sure, you can storm in and bring a whole squad back to life, but you better not buff every soldier you see on the way there. And they better stay alive a bit after you rez them all, because it will be a bit before you have another 3 or more rez supplies available.

I'm not fully sold on the operative kit. I see it's use, but the camo is a bit underpowered for it's main ability. ...but admittedly I can't hack turrets with it yet, and I can see that as a real chaos starter. ...Mayhaps they ought to be able to hack with the camo still on. The hack box should definitely still be removable while they're at it, as well as looking like they're hacking, as the action has a certain pose/object to it... but if they were still in camo, it might make a difference at a distance. Dunno, just saying it seems a bit underpowered compared to the others.

Maps seem well laid out. The only areas where sniping may become an issue are the escort maps... and rightfully it probably should.

All in all, this seems to be the best original conceived game I've played in a good long time. The only thing we've really had anywhere similar to it was Quake Wars. And I don't think I was the only one that really didn't enjoy playing as Strog.

Edit: Okay, the unlocked/bought abilities to the operative are game changing. I just hadn't seen them yet. Goahed, you'll like this....There's a version of martyrdom buy-able on the Operative kit. Caltrop grenades also look like good fun.

I'm glad you came around, now let's get the rest of OKGG in on this action and have a LAN about it Smile I had a full play session last night and I'm even more sold how much I love this game. When they fix the ability to adjust fov without buggyness I'll be even happier. Also fps improvements of course, but that's all coming.

I also like everything you mentioned - and I'm playing Operative. Once you unlock Light it feels so cool to run around at the speed of light doing sneaky stuff. I also think Firewalling is going to be a pretty important ability on servers that allow command post upgrades. I also really like the Sticky Grenade as it gives you two quick throwables when you need 'em. I think my favorite thing about Operative though is being able to be a team player but not having to worry about buffs. That being said, I'm cherrypicking my Op abilities, putting the rest in Engi because I love switching back and forth as is needed.

I think one of my favorite features (will be confirmed as they are fleshed out) are the maps. The fact that you can play a single game on the same map and go from Domination (Guard the _____) to Escort (protect the _____), to Destruction (blow up the/ engineer repair the____) and my personal favorite CTF/Oneflag (retrieve the ____) is really amazing and something I can't remember ever seeing before.

Also MP's are insanely fun, as they were in counter-strike, haha. Another reason I love Light.

If you'd show up for the LAN and nag everybody about it, that'd probably help.

And bring friends!

I think this will happen, haha. We're going to try it out on LAN this weekend.
