Does anyone have one of these I can test out?

I have one bolted to the side of my house, sorry, you can't borrow it. Seriously though, my new house has the new OG&E meter that tells me down to the watt how much electricity I'm using. I've been able to tweak the lights I keep on at night and get my nighttime electricity usage down to about 200 watts. My understanding is I'll eventually be able to see my usage from the OG&E website within an hour of using it.

Hah I thought they were still expensive, I didn't know they were $16 now

I had Googled but apparently I was looking at the wireless SKU.

Bobacus do you have the little one?

I will be going green as well, but not just to "go green" in the normal sense. I want my stuff to run on battery power as long as possible, so it helps if it sips power. If I can stay below 15A for the rack then it will also make wiring cheaper, since I can go with 120VAC.

IMO Dev lab stuff can just take a dump if it's on and the power drops (it's in SVN anyway.) I just want my fileserver to do an orderly shutdown.

There's also the case of my router, an old Pentium II PC. If I can save money dumping it for a newer consumer router, I will.

I have a 2400sqft house that I keep around 75-77 during the times we are home and my elec bill was $106 last month. I just turned the propane fireplace on for the first time last week.

Go with tons of insulation in the attic, walls, and sealed windows and doors. My main energy seep was the hot water heater. I have an 80 gallon that sits in the garage in the open, so I put an insulation blanket on it and noticed instant returns/savings.

That's the one I have, also for your router, what speed P2, how much ram, and what router distro are you running? I just upgraded my WRAP.1E-2 based monowall router to a ALIX2D13 platform, and I've been trying to figure out what to do w/ the WRAP board.

http://pcengines.ch/wrap1e203.htm

That is the specs for that wrap board I have, if I remember correctly, it pulls something like 4 or 6 watts tops, probably less.

model name : Pentium II (Deschutes)
cpu MHz : 349.131
MemTotal: 224488 kB
Disk /dev/harddisk: 6448 MB

it runs IPCop 1.4.21

I have a WRT54G v2, but it cannot handle > 12mbps on the WAN port, so I put a quad port nic in that Dell PII and went on.

I'm really open to anything on routers, I can do iptables shit myself if I want to.

I think my desktop is A-PFC and 75% eff. Might have to look at a new PSU.

When I build again, I will most likely do:

1) 2x6 external frame construction (deeper for more insulation)

2) best tri-pane insulated windows I can get

3) all insulation in walls and ceiling will be a soy based spray foam insulation:
http://soythane.com/

4) All electric appliances/hvac etc

5) instant hot water heaters that are propane or gas fed (the electric ones have a higher failure rate/cant get as hot/take longer to heat)

6) Be sure my electric wiring is set for future solar panels/wind turbine/be able to feed power back to the grid

7) possible solar panel installation depending on cost current technology

Ie: as insulated as possible, with the ability to add solar/wind generation as the tech progresses with the thought of ultimately enerating as much as is used if not more.

I figure with this set up I can achieve a $100 or less electric bill monthly and keep house cool in summer and warm in winter without having energy bill *spikes* like I do now.

Ah, the Wrap board I have hits the wall at about 25mbps w/ m0n0wall, I was maxing out the CPU at those speeds. When I went to the Alix board, which ran me about $200 at netgate, I can now push 30mbps with the cpu toping out at 33%, simply amazing how going from a 233mhz cpu to a 500mhz cpu can give you such a boost.

BTW, do you still want to borrow the kill-a-watt after finding out how cheap they are?

I ended up ordering a Kill-a-watt (well, my wife did) so hopefully I will have that by Christmas Very Happy

I was going to get one of those HP RP3000s on eBay but they disappeared before I got around to it.

Optiplex draws 40W of power according to the Kill-a-watt
Desktop draws 125-160W according to the Kill-a-watt

meh

Next I will have to check on my laptop and Ultra-1
In the middle of a big backup right now, can't shut down my desktop unfortunately.

I was pulling backups from both drives and two laptops into AES encrypted tar gzips, while downloading one 10GB file from Argonne, then PAR2-checking and unRARing another set of files. I also had Picasa running a full reindex.

I got the same ALIX board, I'm still just sitting on my wrap board, not quite sure what I would like to do with it.
