Was wondering if I was the only one who watched the NASA channel last night while we landed, completely on auto pilot, on Mars again.

I had it streaming on my iPad, XOOM, iPhone, and was on the NASA channel. If you guys haven't watched the 7 minutes of terror video, you really should:

Also, if you haven't seen the recent panorama from Opportunity, it is an amazing pic:

They took 817 images, taken over 6 months, and combined them into 1 pic. Looks incredible on my 3 monitor setup at the office.

The coolest thing in the solar system. Was the pictures taken by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter of Curiosity as it descended onto the martian surface.

http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2012/08/mro-curiosity-descent/

Its an interplanetary spacecraft orbiting another planet, taking pictures of another interplanetary spacecraft descending to the surface of that same planet.

Oh, gotcha, and I agree completely. I didn't know until they were modeling the descent and showed both orbiters paths that they'd be crossing the area. Talk about incredible calculations to get them all 3 into the same spot at the same time.

Actually, the limitation is the 280 foot dish antenna they use to send and receive data on earth. The picures you see are the resolution they are because nasa hasn't commanded curiosity to take those bagillion megapixel images yet. It takes so much time out of more important projects that they need the bandwidth for.

$500 million also buys you a half day of war in afganistan.

Thanks Lain, NGT is my hero, right up there with Sagan. I share with you one of my favorite Sagan quotes, "We have also arranged things so that almost no one understands science and technology. This is a prescription for disaster. We might get away with it for a while, but sooner or later this combustible mixture of ignorance and power is going to blow up in our faces."

A fellow Sagan fan? Did you hear about the remake of "Cosmos" hosted by NGT? Can't wait for that.
