Maybe a dd if=/dev/vlm1 of=/dev/null and grab data transfer rates with a watch -n5 -- pkill -USR1 ^dd$
That would give a sequencial read rate. But, I'm happy with streaming 1080p to my laptop. _________________ Blargle Flarg Bergah Merg

Yeah, dd would work
Mainly I was just curious how the read striping performed.
Do you plan to eventually add other 500GB disks and grow the array?

I might. I was actually eyeballing getting 4 2tb drives. But I may just do that for now seeing how I've only got 600g of space used on the current array. _________________ Blargle Flarg Bergah Merg

Well, using the web interface I've been unable to get AFP working correctly. I remember why I don't use BSD. I don't know where shit is. If I can fix AFP I'll probably keep using FreeNAS. Unfortunately AFP is a deal clincher.
I may end up installing ubuntu server and webmin. I can do all the same stuff, it just isn't as easy. _________________ Blargle Flarg Bergah Merg

I do, but I'm thinking I'm gonna use it up at the office. Let me see if I can get a couple more. If I can, you can buy me a beer for one. _________________ Blargle Flarg Bergah Merg

He's been taking it in the can ever since he could remember.

Would you believe, I never had it in the can until recently? _________________ Blargle Flarg Bergah Merg

ext3, 4 is slow and 3 works fine. I'll switch to 4 when it's actually better. _________________ Blargle Flarg Bergah Merg

I run ESXi on my file server chassis with an ubuntu server vm. The main data storage is split off into it's own virtual disk. The network is cheap gig switch and cheap or onboard gig nics. Storage is primarily photos music and large videos.
I got a nice improvement in network writes when I changed to ext4, and a slight read improvement. When you say it is slower, are you meaning for general desktop use? I thought it was better for serving medium to large files over a network?
I'm not so linuxy overall, so I'm genuinely curious.

I've read a few reviews and they all said 3 was a little faster. Can I give numbers? No, but I went with what I was hearing. I have actually installed the desktop packages because I like to vnc into it from remote locations. _________________ Blargle Flarg Bergah Merg
