SLI is over-rated and often actually results in a lower PERCEIVED framerate because it causes microstuttering, though this is far more pronounced on AMD Crossfire than it is on nVidia cards.
The numbers still average out higher, but for some people the ups and downs are quite noticeable. Basically boils down to one high end card being much better than two lower end cards as the stutters don't occur on a single card. If you're playing a game in which you can achieve 100fps then it's not something that you'll notice, but if the SLI/Crossfire cards are only managing 40-50fps most people will be able to see the jumpy framerate.

Don't get me wrong, you guys do excellent work. You're my source for my last 3 machines, but anything she gets from you will have to be re-shipped to her. _________________ Advocating the end of the world since July 1995.

Sli isnt bad at all...especially if you have the extra slot to spread the cards out. My sli 285 setup was amazing. Its when I went to tri-sli that the improvement nowhere near justified the cost, heat and power.
As for micro stuttering I never noticed it but I guess some ppl do.
As for the original question. bottom line most bang for the buck will be a Graphics upgrade. You still have a very capable cpu and most games don't rely on cpu's all that much. And speaking from experience one GTX 580 outperforms two 285's in sli _________________ Core I7 4790K @ 4.7 Ghz
