I'm currently a less than happy U-Verse customer. I went with their service because their DVR is much better and because I have fiber direct to my house. However, my network service has been shit lately and I'm thinking of moving to Cox, at least for the internet side of things. I'm looking at their Ultimate level, 55 mbps down, 5.5 mbps up. Has anyone been on this service? How is it? At $99 a month it is more than I want to spend but DAMN, 55 mbps to my house is insane!!!

I really didn't like the residential service....internet would constantly go down for a minute or two....and they would constantly cut me off for "suspicious traffic" (ok that one is partially my fault). At least the speed was almost always pretty much what they said it was.
Once I upgraded to the Business class life got alot better. Internet always worked (can not remember a single time in 2 years that it was down on there side). Loved the speed and latency. And compared to the internet here I really miss it.
As for the price I would not complain. 50mbps service here is 120 a month and if you want that in the business class its 250 a month _________________ Core I7 4790K @ 4.7 Ghz

I have the 27mbps, 2700kbps service and I have been very, very happy.
I've considered upgrading to the bigger plan just for the upload bandwidth. I decided that the ROI was too low to make the jump.

We have a Cox home business account w/20down and 3 up which is great when it works. However Cox has been dropping connections a LOT lately and that aspect of the service sucks. We spent a lot of time and several calls to Cox which does see the problem but can't seem to find the cause.....can you say OVERSOLD NODE?
No U-Verse available here though so I have to live with it. _________________ Technology Unlimited * www.techunl.net * (405) 773-6037 * [email protected]

I have the same thing as goahed, minus the dropping connections... Have had this account for at least 6+ years with only one problem. One morning around 2:00am modem died, so I called in and about 45 min's later a tech was at my house swapping it out. _________________ Goose

...also, you need a semicolon or comma after "slack", as well as a period of after "Drix". _________________ Advocating the end of the world since July 1995.

A friend discovered an interesting "undocumented feature" on Cox internet service. His modem quit working and he didn't want to wait over the weekend for Cox to give him a new one so he bought one at Best Buy. Turns out the modem itself is what throttles the bandwidth, so he instantly got a speed upgrade while only paying for a low end service.
He enjoyed this free-upgrade until he decided to upgrade to the new "whole home DVR" service. That equipment was totally different and he now only gets what he pays for.
For those of you using Cox without the whole home DVR, it might be worth looking into.

When you replace your modem with cox, it is necessary to call them and inform them of the new serial number and mac address of the modem. If your friend did not do this it would not work. During this phone call is the period where the modem is configured in order to work on the cox network. It is possible that the modem was incorrectly configured to a higher speed. Your friend got lucky, and this will not work again. _________________ Blargle Flarg Bergah Merg

Modems pull their configurations via TFTP from the ISP. If the modem was a cheap piece of crap, it would stand to reason that he got a speed bump from a better modem that actually performed better. It is unlikely that he somehow got the wrong configuration from Cox.
Right now you can possibly get a speed bump by getting a DOCSIS-3 modem. For some reason they appear to provision those a little higher than the older modems.
I didn't know that people actually rented their modems. $5/mo isn't it? When compared to $50 for the unit at Best Buy, it seems like an easy choice.

I said Fuck It and ordered the ultimate. They have a special for $10 off the $99 for 3 months, free install, and free modem (this is new, normally $89). Setup for Monday!!

Whoohoo!!
I think I need to do a little bit of network tweaking and I suspect it will be faster in off-hour usage, but damn its fast. Now to test some other sites.

I'm using a Netgear WNR3500L running DD-WRT. I'm sure it isn't as fast as a dedicated PC would be, but it is a very fast router with a ton of head room.
Off hour speed result:
Yeah Brules, they were able to do the install today. I was definitely excited.
