Hard Drive Prices  Reply with quote

Holy moly......anyone checked HD prices lately......I guess all the doom and gloom stories about Thailand flooding were not hype after all.....

40-50% increase so far from what I have seen. Shocked

Example: This drive was $69 last week and $119 yesterday.....$129 today:

Some gouging going on!

Wowzers!

Also saw this quote:

Western Digital: The company estimates a two-month production halt and then another four to six months to resume full operations

So anyone looking for a HD soon, I would run, not walk to your nearest store and buy what they have before they get a chance to price jump. Online retailers have done so, big boxes have not.....YET.

Saw this on Hardforum, wow.....doesnt look good!:

The flooding is getting worse daily. Most of Bangkok is under 3 ½ feet of water as we speak and it is expected to rise ever further as more rain as well as groundwater seeps to the surface. The dykes and levees in and around the city are virtually inundated and there is a growing threat that the flood waters could be as much as 5 feet in the city this weekend.

As far as the Hard Drive manufacturer’s are concerned, the WD, Seagate, and Hitachi facilities there are completely shut down and there is no word on when or if they will be back up and running. There is also an unconfirmed report that WD has declared their facility a total loss. As it stands right now, Distribution has canceled ALL open backorders for all WD, Seagate, and Hitachi drives across the board and they will not accept any purchase orders from us going forward so it would be well for all of you to understand that any sales orders submitted for Drives will probably not be ordered much less filled. Please be aware that we are doing absolutely everything possible to secure as much stock as we can.

No bueno! You know 6+ months from now, they will get back into full production and then it will take FOREVER for prices to fall again. Gonna suck.....

And it don't stop........

1TB WD Black 64mb cache 7200 RPM 6gb/sec was $79 - now $219!!!!!!!!!!!

I have to wonder is this disaster will speed up the transition to SSD's and be the death toll of traditional hard drives? Interesting to consider.......I wonder how fast SSD's can ramp up/reduce costs VS HD plants being repaired and brought back into full production?

Interesting scenario I must say!

We were discussing that a couple weeks ago @ Goahed's on Thursday night. It'd be interesting if this moved Hard disks to the point of being archive drives instead to the primary drives in system drives.

Given the affordability that TB drives got to, it won't stop them from being made once they ramp up... but exactly as you say, This may give SSD's a chance to step up to a larger part of the market. They drop in price a bit, and I'll definitely be replacing my system drive with one.

Well from what I am reading, most of the plants got flooded and are complete loses.....so does WD/Hitachi etc rebuild old tech facilities or new SSD facilities? Maybe both? I have to think the OEM's are pushing like mad for old cheap HD's though!

We bought enough to tide us over until spring when we heard about the flood damage.

November 9th: Situation critical....it has been some time now....the data streams are still coming nearly 100gb a day. Our situation is dire....I estimate only a few more weeks before we are overwhelmed.... Local drives are done...and it is much the same across other machines. Network storage is completely gone. They never had a chance.... We are beginning to bring external storage up through our USB data buses and are in the process of adapting reserve units as a stopgap to maintain the flow. But with such small capacities we do not hold out much hope that it will help......
