I use etherwake in ubuntu. There's nothing to it.

DD-WRT can send WOL packets, too.

hmmm messed around with spiceworks a little and it can do it but I was hoping for something a little more simple. Will check into etherwake for the linux box and will start digging around in my DD-WRT modem and see if I can get this set up nicely.....

the idea I am shooting for is to have any PC in the house be able to power on any other PC in the house. Kinda like how I have VNC set up on all the comps....

I have always wondered why you would want WOL? Like what or how would you use it?

-power saving, save on wear/tear from operation
-you might have a rack full of noisy equipment that you don't want on all the time but you don't want to open the rack to turn stuff on all the time.
-you might have a rack full of 42 1u servers and you don't want to chase down the physical location of the one you want to boot
-you might be at work and your computer is off, but you want to boot it up and log in to it
-you might have a case mod that makes it hard to turn a computer on/off
-you might have disconnected your power and reset switches to keep your kids from shutting your computer down

you might be this guy and want to turn on another computer in your house:

Tomato (http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato) will allow you to use WOL through the firmware similar to DD-WRT. I actually use and prefer Tomato to DD-WRT.

Messed around with the DD-WRT but never managed to get it working....most likely cause its only serving as an AP right now....

Mainly wanted to be able to power on comps without leaving the chair.....The idea I am contemplating now is a central switch box that outputs to all the comps motherboard headers for a hardware power on as most of my comps are and will be located in teh rack....

do it from your laptop.... there are WOL programs for Winders too.

it's not hard, i used to bullseye womprats back home in my t-16 and they're not much bigger than 2 meters.
