New Desktop at Work  Reply with quote

A few months ago I pulled together some parts from our computer graveyard. A new motherboard got me where I needed to be to have a working desktop at work.

It is a 2.4ghz Core2 machine with 2 gigs of ram.

I installed Ubuntu as the host OS and then installed WinXP via VirtualBox for the various windows software that I need.

I hadn't used Linux as my full desktop OS for some time. I've supported quite a number of linux servers with various different purposes. I now don't know how I managed doing my job without a desktop. I used my laptop for most everything, and that was kind of a problem because I'd have a hard drive cloning or something and I'd need to leave. I'd have to leave my laptop or start again later.

Laptops are great, but you just can't beat a Desktop you can leave doing your work while you're out.

Desktops are great as a landing pad, that's my theory anyway.

I don't think I could ever have a laptop as my "primary" machine at all except for an office job. I did work on a nice laptop for awhile that then hooked into a 24" at work for dual mons, but I gave that up for a 24" iMac + 24" after 6 months or so.

It was nice being able to take my work home but having to leave the desktop there was generally a better feeling Very Happy

I with the others on screen size. I use a desktop at work for multi-monitor. I can't do my job effectively without two or more monitors.
