I bought my daughter a Dell 15R 15.6" laptop for Christmas and I absolutely hate the screen size. It just seems way to wide and short. What a stupid resolution as well, 1366x768. I guess I'm just old school or something, but that just seems odd. Plus, the super cheapass TN panel they used is a total disgrace to all other laptops in this world. (And don't even get me started on glossy screens for laptops)

If I hadn't have scored the freakin deal of the decade on this thing I seriously would send it back. But its a Dual core P320 with 3GB mem Windows 7 Home Prem and 250GB 7200RPM drive and 4650 video and DVD burner (wanted blu-ray but ho well) all for $410 shipped.

*sigh*

That stupid resolution is 720p, and yes it's stupid on a laptop that big. 1440x900 should be the minimum screen size for ANY laptop 13" and up.

in my experience, more expensive laptops have better resolution

these new mainstream panels are crap and marketed to the eyeballs

I'm already missing my laptop and I haven't even shipped it out yet. 15.6" @ 1920x1080 and quad core goodness. Luckily I'm getting a 1080p projector in trade for it so yay!

I've never seen a windows resolution (1366) that wasn't divisible by 4, that is a very strange lcd panel.

If you've never seen 1366x768 then you've never ever messed with an HDTV or another 720p panel.

My E6410 is 1440x900 - I hate it.....good and fast, but screen size is the suck.

I think I'd be more happy with 1440x900... But, its not for me, and she's a stupid kid that will be happy with it anyway I'm sure. Smile

Ah another E6410 owner, I really like mine. If you have not already purchased one I highly recommend the 2nd hard drive adapter http://newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=224, even lets you hot swap extra hard drives.

yea not a fan of the trend of using hdtv monitors for computers. But I recognize that the 16:10 ratio LCD panels are loosing ground to the cheaper 16:9 tv panels.

It is a shame, I couldn't stand 16:9 for the longest time until my laptop was 1080p. Still not the biggest fan, but you have to get used to it. Sad

There are plenty of 1920x1200 monitors out there, but you're not going to find many in laptops or outside of high end IPS panel monitors. It's the wave of the future unfortunately.

From an H|F thread a while back

16:9
Dell SP2309W is 2048x1152 and sells for $200 right now on Dell. The Acer B233HU bmidhz has the same res and a better stand if you can find somebody selling one. The only other monitor with that res is the Samsung 2343BWX, which doesn't seem to be better than the other two in any way.

16:10
There are good 1920x1200 displays for $300 and under. You can get a Hanns-G at 28" for $300 and an Asus 25.5" for ~$280.

-------------
I run two 19" 1280x1024 panels right now because I refuse to downgrade to a shitbox panel.
My dream would be a Sony GDM-FW900.

I do like it, the 2048 x 1152 res is nice in a 23" 16:9 monitor, what is depressing though is I have a 19 CRT (NEC FE991SB) that i bought in 2003/2004 that sits right next to it and it can go up to 1792 x 1344. They are literally the same physical height, really wish the lcd had a few more vertical pixels though.

15.6" at WUXGA 1920x1200 is awesome, my hp elitebook has one. It will kill me if I ever have to go back to a lower res on a new laptop in the future.
