I've not kept up with hardware.  Reply with quote

I need to buy a new cpu and my budget is $175 for the cpu. This is for the computer that I blew the power supply up in. Gaming machine mostly.

I'm debating between these two:
E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz 6MB

Q8400 Yorkfield 2.66GHz 4MB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115057

I've already got a motherboard. I had sent a defective mobo from gigabyte and have the refurb in.
I also need a power supply if anyone can donate a decent one. I'll trade a rackmount case for it. Smile

If you would consider used, which on a CPU I hope you would, you can pick up an E8400 for $95-$110. I bought one last month for my uncle's new PC for $100 shipped.

Q6600 is my recommended buy for a quad-core IF you get a G0 stepping chip. The B3 runs extremely hot and has little overclocking ability, but a G0 will pretty much guaranteed hit 3.4ghz with a good cooler and they sell for less than $150 fairly regularly.

No, I am not talking about eBay. Yes, if you are interested I'd be glad to help.

EDIT: Not sure how much you care about overclocking, but either stepping of that E8400 will likely get you to 4.0ghz with little effort, many of them do it with less than stock volts. It's a very good chip, but games like SupCom and I assume SupCom2 gain alot from a quad-core.
